wood, wire, bay tree leaves, 2023, 201 x 104 x 19 cm
Vanitas themed art works revolve around topic of death, mortality, the passage of time, and the futility of earthbound strivings. There are three symbols incorporated to this sculpture. First of all, it is a scythe, for long now associated with death. Secondly the bay leaves, that used to crown heads of Olympians and Rome’s triumphant commanders, representing power and glory. And binding it at last the message of dying, drying leaves, reminding us about the feeble and fleeting nature of might.
